We Are All Called to Teach Somebody Something
SCRIPTURE: Titus 2
Read the passage
BIO: My name is Spencer Fetter. I am a nine year old member of First Presbyterian Church of Orlando. I LOVE my church and the Genesis service. It "ROCKS"! I also like helping my mom and dad plan our Sunday school lesson for the third graders. I like swimming and football. I also enjoy reading and Legos. I like drawing pictures of aliens. My favorite movie is any Harry Potter and my favorite book (at this very moment) is Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot vs. The Uranium Unicorns from Uranus. I have two sisters and we love to play board games, especially Clue and Monopoly. My favorite bible verse is John 3:16.
KEY VERSE: Titus 2:6-7 Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity and seriousness.
CENTRAL TRUTH: God is trying to point out a role model for behavior for different groups of people. He wants these models to be passed on and on through generations.
DEVOTIONAL: We Are All Called to Teach Somebody Something–
I. Who are you called to be an example for?
Take a look at yourself. Look around you. Who are you hanging out with? Eating lunch with? Playing with? These people are influenced by your actions and words. Now is the time to act. This is your chance to show others what following Jesus looks like. Don’t mess up.
Are you right now asking yourself how do I do this?
if we love God we should find it easy to do what he wants right? WRONG! The world is all about "Me" these days. We are selfish and uncaring of others, the environment and even ourselves.
What kind of role models are we? Ask yourself how many people you smiled at today. How many times you went against the crowd and didn’t engage in gossip. How about how many times you ask for more or newer or better? How did you behave when you lost the game? Or won? How about when you fought with a friend. Were forgiveness, humility, patience, love and compassion evident in your behavior? In other words, were you wearing grace today? No? We have the ability to change this. Titus 2 instructs us on how to instruct others and how to model this behavior to others.
2. How can you be a Godly example?
Decide right here and now to follow God and his sound doctrine. Some good places to find this doctrine? Check out the bible, a Sunday School class and prayer.
We need to use God as our example– his grace "teaches us to say no to ungodliness and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives" in the midst of this fast-paced, iphone-adoring world we live in. We can’t just text or email each other instructions on how we should behave. We need to get out there and interact with people, all people, as many as we can. What a great way to spread the Good News- by modeling God’s grace.
The key is to focus on the great Hope- Christ who "gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify us." We need to draw on this truth every single day and remember that everything is for the Lord above.
QUESTION 1: Who all is this passage speaking to?
QUESTION 2: How do we achieve God’s desired behavior for us?
QUESTION 3: How does God work in your life?
Thanks, Spencer, for sharing such a great devotion. You captured whist Paul was telling Titus then and us now. We have the chance to touch people’s lives for Christ through our words and actions. Every day we can show people His way.
